Kangaroos summer adventures at Hindleap Warren

We did it! After what can only be described as an incredibly challenging year and a half, we finally managed the very best of what we do at Kangaroos!

It was touch-and-go just a few months ago whether we would be able to take our members away on a summer residential break. But with a whole lot of planning (and hoping) our four summer overnight and 2-night trips to Hindleap Warren went ahead as planned. And boy did our members have a fabulous time.

Cassi, one of our amazing sessional staff members, was one of the Kangaroos team supporting members on all three of the trips. It was so much fun, she’s written a blog telling us all about the experience. Here’s what she had to say:

This summer, Kangaroos has been on holiday!  Lots of members and staff have spent time on residential trips to Hindleap Warren, an outdoor activity centre in Forest Row.  It’s been a blast!  Members and staff chose to stay for either 1 or 2 nights over a series of trips and took part in a number of exciting activities.

The accommodation:

Staff and members stayed in dorms at the activity centre.  It was great fun for everyone to settle in with their roo-mmates (pun intended!) and hang out in our dorm zone together.  The rooms were set up to meet the needs of each member, and staff were on hand at all times to make sure that everyone was comfortable and happy.

The food:

Meals and snacks were provided by the centre for members and staff, and all the food was delicious!  There was plenty of choice at each meal so there was something for everyone.  The build-your-own-baguettes, hot dogs, breakfast pastries, and ice creams with topping choices were all big hits to name just a few, and we all loved the hot chocolate and cookies provided for evening movies!

The activities:

Activities at the centre were completely accessible so everyone got a chance to enjoy the different sessions.  Activities that Kangaroos took part in included zipwire, archery, swimming, pool boarding, bushcraft, team building, orienteering, nature walks, obstacle courses, and high ropes.  Staff were blown away by how so many members pushed themselves out of their comfort zones, overcame their fears and supported each other to achieve their goals.

Some of the activities, like the high ropes, were really challenging, and it was fantastic to see everyone giving it a go and growing confident so high off the ground.  Some members even completed the high ropes course blindfolded!

Parts of the obstacle courses were also quite challenging.  Some of us braved the underground tunnels, courageously crawling through tight spaces in the dark!  Others braved the muddy obstacles, getting a bit mucky in the process!  Luckily there was time for nice hot showers after!

Fun-packed evenings:

After such busy days you’d think we’d all want to laze around and be pouch potatoes (pun intended again!), but evenings were just as fun-packed with campfire sessions and evening walks, followed by movie nights and trips to the tuck shop.  Evening campfires were a firm favourite across the groups.  We all loved toasting marshmallows, singing songs, telling stories around the campfire, and talking about all the activities of the day.
